A different way to celebrate Thanksgiving

Touring Mexico for Thanksgiving

I decided that since I don’t go home for the holidays, why waste four perfect consecutive days that do not count against my vacation to travel to Mexico?

This was the year I started trading turkey for tacos. I booked the trip to Guanajuato. If you are unfamiliar with Guanajuato, it is a beautiful city located in central Mexico. Settled between Mountains and valleys. The city has plenty to see and do

We stayed downtown at  Real Guanajuato.  It had a fantastic view from the rooftop.

There is a coffee shop, Café Conquistador, located next to the hotel for your coffee and pastries.

There are several restaurants and shops nearby that have what you need.

We walked the streets, discovering street vendors, shops, markets, and restaurants along the way.

We came across a street vendor selling hot dogs, and if you have never had a hot dog in Mexico, I would recommend trying one. I don’t remember the name of the vendor, but they were set up near  Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato.

The view is from the rooftop of our hotel, Real Guanajuato.

We unfortunately missed the hot air balloon festival. Since we arrived around Thanksgiving, and it takes place Nov 14-17th

We did, however, stumble upon the wine festival, and that was a pleasant surprise. I admit I am not one for festivals, so when I booked my trip, I only looked for what interesting Guanajuato had to offer. It was a pleasant surprise to have the opportunity to experience these local events.

Our hotel room had a balcony so we could see some of the festivities taking place.

I bought a few items from the local artist who set up shop at these events, selling  Mexican folklore art.

A street vendor was selling Mexican hot dogs, and if you have never had one, I would recommend checking him out. I don’t remember the name of the vendor, but they were set up near  Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato.

The entire trip, we spent time exploring the city, walking around downtown through the Historical Center, Mercado Hidalgo, Alhondiga de la Ganadería, and Jardín Union.  Celebrating Thanksgiving in Guanajuato, Mexico, proved to be an enriching experience for my son.

The Mercado Hidalgo offers good food and shopping.

We found numerous restaurants on our walking tour, along with some excellent street vendors. Our favorite was selling the best hot dogs we have ever had. We enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving in Mexico. Once things are for sure, the hot dogs turned out to be our favorite, go figure.
